Chairman Mao – the Leader and the Revolution
Mao Zedong by Jonathan D. Spence
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Very good and concise biography of Mao Zedong though you need to have read other Chinese Communist history to understand this book better from Mao’s perspective. Major policies set by Mao and the failings of them like ‘the great leap forward‘ & ‘the cultural revolution‘ were significant events mentioned in this book without detailed elaborations for you to truly grasp their fallibility. Nonetheless, Jonathan Spence is a renowned Chinese historian and this book is deliberately kept brief for a non-specialist reader like me. It’s like a quick summary about a complex study.
